Where and How to Install Back Up Camera For Car?

Do you wish to have a better view of what's behind your car while reversing the car? Installing a back up camera to your car can dramatically increase your rear vision and safety while backing up and parking.

Where to install back up camera?

A rear view camera is a special designed camera which is mounted to the rear of the car, usually near your license plate at back. Some rear view cameras should be installed by replacing one of the car license plate lights, don't worry, the new back up camera can be made with LED light for better night vision. Some back up cameras installed where the trunk handle is. Others can be installed in the reserved hole near the license plate light.

You will also need a monitor to work with the backup camera so the rear view video can be displayed at front when in reverse, unfornately nearly all original screen monitor from the car does not come with a RCA connector which the aftermarket camera used for connection, so you can also buy a small monitor which can be stuck on the top dashboard or an aftermarket head unit with large screen monitor to replace the old radio unit.

Here are some useful tips to help you select which back up camera and what type of model is right for your car.

Firstly you can check the back of the vehicle, especially for the position near the license plate light, is there a reversed hole for the camera? If yes, you can measure the dimensions in mm and tell it to the back up camera supplier so they can know which model is right for your car. You can also try to replace one of the car license plate lights and install the new back up camera, that's also clean looking and easy installation.

For instance, i have a BMW 325i and want to install a back up camera, what's my choice?

The best way is upgrading the factory radio head unit with an aftermarket Android BMW E46 head unit and adding an aftermarket back up camera with RCA connector. Why? The aftermarket Android head unit provides you multiple modern features including GPS navigation, Bluetooth, WiFi, DVD player and more, and it works well with the back up camera, which replaces the vehicle license plate light for installation, so it looks like OEM. Besides, the aftermarket back up camera works well with the head unit, and you don't need to buy another monitor to display the camera videos, by the way, if you are looking for a back up camera for BMW 3 series e46, e90, f30, BMW X5, BMW X6, you can check this license plate light camera:

How to install back up camera?

Well, that depends on the position where you need to install the back up camera, the most used position is the car license plate light, remove it, then install the camera.

Some people prefer wireless back up camera because it's easier for installation, however, if you want the camera installed in your car to last long you should choose the wired camera instead because the wireless camera is not so stable compared with the wired one. Besides, after a long time the signal from the wireless camera may be weak, then you would need to replace it and install a new one. Installation for the wires camera is a little complicated as you need to run the long video cable from the front dash to the back of the vehicle, but that's really worth to do that if you want a stable and long-lasting back up camera.

Follow these easy steps to install a backup camera.

  1. Find out the position where the backup camera will be installed, let's take license plate light for example
  2. Remove the car license plate light, unplug it. It will be replaced
  3. Run the 6m long camera video cable from the front to the back
  4. Find your reverse light, the camera should be powered with 12V reverse light, one red wire to positive, and black wire to negative.
  5. Connect the video cable with the monitor, it's a yellow RCA plug, so just plug and play, for this step, you may need to connect a trigger line from the head unit which usually named BACK with one red wire from the long camera video cable, if there's one such wire from the head unit, then connect it, from the other end of the long video cable, there's another loose red wire, it should connect with 12V+ reverse light power.
  6. Connect the power for the camera with your reverse light.
  7. Insert the car key, put in reverse gear, and check if the monitor automatically switches to back up video, if not, check the trigger wire and see if it's well connected.
The installation instructions for back up camera are more or less the same for nearly all car models. The most difficult part should be running the long video cable because it takes much time. DSP Wires Connection for Aftermarket BMW X5 GPS Navigation System Installation

For those who want to upgrade the factory head unit on a BMW X5 E53, and install a new aftermarket BMW X5 navigation GPS head unit, the first question you should know is if your car has DSP amplifier. For BMW X5 with DSP amp, installation is a little different.

If you have confirmed that your X5 has DSP amplifier, and together with a 7 inch large screen in the dash where the factory radio is, then you should use a long cable running from the front to the rear trunk to connect a 40 pins plug under the trunk. For 2002 year afterwards, BMW X5 E53 comes with flat 40 pins connectors, for a 2001 year BMW X5, it should be with round 17 pins connectors.

So we are talking about installation of 2002-2006 BMW X5 E53 with a 7 inch large screen in the dashboard, and with DSP amplifier, your factory radio looks like as following:

As you can see, there's a large screen in the dash, so you need to use a 6m long power cable. How to run this long cable? You can run the long cable under the carpet along the door frames, removed the back seat to get access to the trunk, and hid the wires behind the cover panel in the trunk.

How to find the 40 pins plug under the trunk? Just check below pictures:

About 4 loose wires: 1 yellow, 1 black and 2 white wires.
  1. Yellow: connect to 12V+ car battery
  2. Black: connecto to 12V- car battery(Ground wire)
  3. You will not need to connect the 2 white loose wires.

While if your car does not have DSP amplifier, you will not need to connect these wires, so installation is easier. After you connected the yellow and black wires with your car battery, but still the unit does not support DSP amplifier(no sound), you will need to splice 8 speaker wires to connect your 8 speaker wires for each car door speaker directly to get sound, if not, you can also install the new BMW X5 navigation GPS radio with an external amplifier with RCA connectors(FRONT-L, FRONT-R, REAR-L, REAR-R) and non DSP or fiber optical.

If your BMW X5 E53 just comes with business CD and radio, before installing a new aftermarket multimedia navigation unit, you can learn how to remove the original BMW X5 radio here.

This instruction is also suitable for the new Android BMW X5 navigation head unit: https://www.dvdgpsnav.com/android-bmw-x5-e53-dvd-gps-navigation-head-unit-radio-navi-bluetooth-usb.html
New Update: This Android head unit has been upgraded to Android 10 OS now, without extra fees needed. Price is the same as before.

How to Update GPS Maps for Navigation Head Unit?

Have already installed and used an aftermarket in-dash multimedia GPS navigation head unit for years? If yes, you should update your GPS maps with new version now. For some countries road changes are minor but new maps will give you a fresh looking and you can enjoy driving for a trip.

The most common GPS maps in the market are IGO, TomTom, Sygic, etc. Let's take IGO maps for example because IGO maps are widely used all over the world and it's one of the most popular maps nowadays. Old maps are usually located in a SD card which has already inserted into the GPS card slot, which is usually at the front panel of your unit. What you will need to do is replacing the old map files in the SD card with newer ones.

IGO maps include two parts, one is the software and the other is map files. The IGO software is located in the root directory and with a IGO.exe or Primo.exe file included. Map files are located in content > maps folder. If you don't need to update the software then you can just replace map files under maps folder.

Follow below steps will help you update GPS maps easily and safely.
  1. Where can i get new maps? Firstly you can contact the supplier who has sold you the navigation unit and ask them to see if they provide free update for you. If not, you can try to search on google to find new maps for your country.
  2. Firstly you should backup all files from the SD card in your computer. If new maps does not work then you can install back the previous maps, this step is very important.
  3. If you have got the entire new maps including software, then you can delete all files in the GPS card, and copy new maps into the SD card, it may take about several minutes to copy them as the map files are in large size. If you just got maps folder, then you can delete content folder and then delete this folder and copy the new one.
  4. Insert the SD card into the GPS card slot, not the other SD card slot. Now enter into GPS path settings by touch screen, settings > navigation(or navi path), select the root Primo.exe or IGO,exe, click "OK", that' all, then you can test GPS function and see how it works now.
